Our School Council plays an important role in promoting British Values and supporting pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development.
The council is made up of pupils who are chosen by their classmates and form teachers to represent the views of their form groups. Council members meet regularly to share ideas, discuss issues, and work with staff to help improve school life.
Through the School Council, pupils actively experience democracy by voting for representatives and seeing how their ideas can influence decisions. They learn about individual liberty by confidently sharing their views and knowing these will be listened to and respected. Meetings encourage mutual respect as pupils listen to different opinions and work together to agree on outcomes. The council also promotes tolerance and inclusion by representing pupils from across the school and valuing everyone’s voice.
The work of the School Council also strongly supports SMSC development. Pupils develop social skills by working as a team, communicating with others, and taking responsibility. Moral development is supported as pupils consider fairness, behaviour, and how decisions impact others. Spiritual development is encouraged through reflecting on how they can make a positive difference to the school community, for example through charity work and fundraising. Cultural development is enhanced through organising events and activities that help pupils understand and contribute positively to the wider world.
Overall, the School Council helps pupils feel valued, builds confidence and leadership skills, and supports them in becoming responsible, respectful and active citizens.
